We are committed to providing our students with world-class, research-driven teaching, in a dynamic learning environment with excellent facilities. The quality of our staff, their teaching and their research are manifest across all disciplines. We have achieved major successes in New Zealand's Tertiary Teaching Excellence Awards. And in the first national evaluation of university research quality (PBRF), Waikato had 28 subjects assessed and was ranked first or first equal in seven of them (25%). These are:

  • Accounting and Finance
  • Chemistry
  • Communications, Journalism and Media Studies
  • Computer Science
  • Management, Human Resources, Industrial Relations, International Business and other Business
  • Molecular, Cellular and Whole Organism Biology
  • Pure and Applied Mathematics

Although Waikato is a relatively young university, it has forged a strong international reputation. We strive to play an even more prominent role on the international scene, exposing staff and students to international connections and perspectives. Our global connections are wide and strong, and our international student profile is diverse. But the University of Waikato also has a very special character which is linked to our region and to the industries, enterprises, communities and iwi with whom we are partners and whose interests we serve.

About Waikato University:

From modest beginnings on what was largely farmland, the University of Waikato has grown to a student population of about 13,000 of whom more than 4800 complete a qualification annually. Today the University employs 2000 academic and support staff, making a significant contribution to the local and national economy. We are committed to delivering a world-class education and research portfolio, providing a full and dynamic university experience, distinctive in character, and pursuing strong international links to advance knowledge. Since our earliest days we have worked closely with iwi, particularly Tainui, to make the University accessible to Maori students and to foster an environment of success. We are proud of our evolution into a truly New Zealand institution, supporting our country's nation-building policies and reflecting our nation's identity.
