UGC Selects 8 Tamil Nadu Institutes for Kendras

COIMBATORE:
The University Grants Commission on Tuesday published the list of recommended institutions in the country to set up Deendayal Upadhyay Kaushal Kendras. A total of eight institutions have been selected from Tamil Nadu. The scheme was introduced to implement skill-based career oriented courses. The UGC called for proposals from institutions across the country in January this year. A total of 708 institutions had applied for grants from the UGC this year. The apex body has recommended 48 institutions across the country under the government and aided category, while 17 in the self-financed category.

The eight institutions selected for the grant under the government and aided category are: Bharathidasan University (Trichy), Sri Ramakrishna Mission Vidyalaya College of Arts and Science (Coimbatore), Gandhigram Rural Institute of Tamil Nadu (Gandhigram), Vivekanand College (Kanyakumari), Loyola College (Chennai), Dr N G P Arts and Science College (Coimbatore), Sri Ramakrishna College of Arts and Science for Women (Coimbatore) and S N S College of Technology (Coimbatore). While the government and government-aided institutions have received funds from the UGC for starting the vocational centres, self-financing institutions have to shell out money from their trusts to start the Kaushal Kendras. Sri Ramakrishna College of Arts and Science Principal, S Savithitri, said, "We are happy to have been recommended as one of the 65 institutions in the country. But, we have to now look for funds to construct the centre and install the necessary infrastructure for the centres."
