Kota Domiciled Students Lead the Pack of JEE Crackers

KOTA:
Kota is a popular coaching hub for students seeking admissions in IITs, IIMs and medical colleges. Students from across the country come to prepare for the engineering and medical competitions. The competitive spirit now seems to have rubbed off on the locals kids too. Seven students, all domiciled in Kota, have featured in the list of top 100 candidates in the recently declared JEE-advanced results. This is the highest figure for any city. In the last five years, Kota domiciled students have bagged positions like all-India ranks 2, 4 and 8, which is a rare feat for this city.

This year too, Kota students have done well. Kshitiz Garg bagged the all-India rank 23, Kshitiz Jain 36, Akshat Gupta 40, Vishwajeet Singh Bagdawat 48, Jatin Arora 54, Mukul Chaturvedi 73, while Sarthak Mishra bagged the all-India rank 93. The coaching institutes have deeply influenced the population of Kota. This is one of the reasons why a higher percentage of Kota students are opting for science-math combination after class X than any other city in the state. Kshitiz Jain, a resident of New Jawahar Nagar in Kota, said, "Since my childhood, I was very much fascinated by the coaching culture of the city. We were also a part of celebrations directly or indirectly when the results were declared." Sharing the experience of living in the neighbourhood of major coaching institutes in Talwandi, Jatin Arora said, "These institutes have been a part of my life as I walk past them twice a day. Their presence has an added advantage for the students of Kota."

Every year, 4 to 5 students from Kota city are featuring in list of top 100 candidates. Even bigger cities like Hyderabad, Chennai, Pune and Bengaluru have lesser number of students in this list. Explaining the phenomenon, Brajesh Maheshwari, director of a private coaching institute, said, "This is due to the fact that Kota is providing an ideal environment for IIT coaching. It has seen a good number of schools teaching science subjects in classes XI and XII. Another advantage which the Kota students have is that they can start preparations as early as in class VI, whereas outside students generally come here after class X.
