Heave a Sigh as NEET 2012 Cancelled

National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET), a single national level entrance test for admissions to MBBS and dental undergraduate courses in all medical colleges of India will not be held in 2012. Central Board of Secondary education (CBSE) has withdrawn its proposal from the Supreme Court on January 9, 2012. CBSE took this decision after the Supreme Court criticized the opinion differences within the Government, between the health ministry on one hand and MHRD and CBSE on the other. Earlier, CBSE had raised an application in the SC, briefing the requirement of a single entrance examination to ease students from the pressure of writing too many entrance tests conducted by different colleges.  After receiving the consent from both Medical Council of India (MCI) and Union Health and family Welfare Ministry, the court approved the proposal of conducting a single national level entrance test. Consequently, CBSE announced the dates of the test to be held in 2012.

On January 9, 2012, CBSE requested the apex court to withdraw its application. The move to cancel NEET in 2012 has come as a rescue for Karnataka. The state opposed accepting NEET in 2012 as the science syllabus for PU students is entirely different from that followed in other parts of the country. Karnataka wants to take up NEET in 2014 so that students get enough time to catch up. The sources from health ministry revealed that conducting NEET for undergraduate courses (NEET-UG) in 2012 was a challenging task which required huge amount of preparation and due to lack of time; it was not possible to resolve the issues of different states and conduct NEET-UG in 2012. The decision to put off NEET in 2012 has given a sigh of relief to the medical aspirants and now they can prepare for state level medical entrance exams without any confusion.
