Dream Vocation

Choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life, said Confucius, the famous Chinese philosopher. Successful people, from different walks of life, endorse this philosophy and stress on the need to let our passions guide us in our choice of career

All of us have the potential of greatness within us. But have you ever wondered why some people are so successful, while others barely manage to scrape through life? The only difference between achievers and non-achievers is that the former made a choice to be successful. They opted to do something that they really like for a living. Former cricketer Kapil Dev emphasizes that it is of paramount importance to have an overriding zeal for what you do in life. But he makes a distinction between people whose dreams are relatively easy to g pursue as compared to those that are more challenging and not as monetarily rewarding. "People like us are fortunate that they could make a career out of our passion for cricket. But for those who are passionate about painting or singing or dancing it might be slightly more difficult. They have to strive really hard to make a career out of it and not give up their dreams midway because of the challenges they have to face. They are the ones who need to give it their all to make a successful career out of the things they enjoy doing." It has been testified, time and again, that without passion, dreams remain mere goals. The only thing that can make dreams more profound is passion. Goals are vital, but it is only when you listen to your heart that you get the right results.

Celebrity chef Sanjeev Kapoor strongly recommends following one's dream, but appends it with a word of pragmatism, "I think it is important to live your passion, but it is a very individualistic trait. We must be passionate about what we do, but not every passion would yield results. Sometimes people who have followed their dreams have failed, but we do not hear about them because they never get written about. But in any case, it is good if you feel strongly about your dreams because even if you fail at least you would have the satisfaction of having done what you liked. As for myself, I had decided very early on in life that I wanted to do something different - something that nobody in my family. Had ever done. So soon after finishing school, I took up hotel management as a career choice." Geetika Ganju, emcee and TV anchor, too, agrees that it is necessary to choose a career that you are passionate about but believes that luck has a huge part to play in the process. "I think it is one of the biggest blessings in the world to be able to do what you are really passionate about. See, one spends so much time and care choosing a life partner, a home and other assets, so why not a career? It is something you gonna be doing for the next 40 years of your life. So it better be something that you really enjoy but it has also got a lot to do with the opportunities that come your way and whether your parents allow you to pursue your dreams. As for me, anchoring happened to me quite by accident. I was trained to be a filmmaker from Jamia Milia Islamia. But luck had other plans for me. However, now when I look back, I can safely say that I have enjoyed every minute of being on the stage." Some people even go to the extent of saying that people with passion and dreams live longer, happier, healthier lives.

Ashutosh Rana, film actor, considers it his life's philosophy to do what gives him pleasure. Says he, "I believe that one chooses a career for any one of the three reasons - power, profit or pleasure. If you work for power, then you may or may not get profit and pleasure. If you seek profit in your profession then you may or may not get power and pleasure. But if you work for pleasure, then profit and power are guaranteed. And you are bound to get pleasure when your passion becomes your profession. It means that you would have to work for yourself and nobody else. You will not feel tired, no matter how long you work. I derive maximum pleasure from acting and I think it is a great tool to enhance your personality. You can see your exterior profile when you stand in from of the mirror, but in or der to get in touch with your inner persona you have to face the society which echoes your true personality." According to Lushir Dubey, theatre person, the choice of career is the single most important thing in life. "It is the very life force and the source of sustenance of your being," says she. "It is the elixir that seeps into every aspect on your life. Most people just stumble into their careers and remain dissatisfied with what they do although; I must say that today’s youngsters are far more astute and selfish, which is not necessarily a bad thing as Long as it makes you and those around you happy. I am passionate about the performing arts which is what I do. I am passionate about painting, too and I enjoy doing theatre with children. For me, theatre has to be socially relevant," adds Lushin who has been involved with promoting children's the atre in Delhi. It is a given that everybody has unique talents But it is only when we discover them, follow and live our passion, can we lead an extraordinary life.
