44 Colleges in State in Poor Condition

BHOPAL:
At least 44 government colleges in the state are on ventilator. This is what was disclosed in the recently completed grading by higher education department. Grading was done on seven parameters. These included curriculum, teaching-learning and evaluation, research, consultancy and extension, infrastructure and learning resources, student support and progression, governance, leadership and management and innovations and best practices. There are around 390 colleges in the state. However, grading was done for only 250 colleges. Speaking to TOI, joint director, KM Jain said grading was done only for colleges functioning for more than five years. Of 250 colleges, only 17 colleges were given A grade category (very good). B grade (good) was given to 100 colleges, while 89 were in grade C.

He said objective of grading was to prepare an authentic data on condition of colleges. "In normal course, colleges get grading from National Assessment and Accreditation Cell. On the same pattern, department also wanted to keep a separate data on colleges," said Jain. For this purpose, different teams comprising three members each were formed in districts. "We tried to involve members like English teachers, librarians and others. It took almost a month to compile data," said Jain. He admitted colleges which were given D grade (unsatisfactory) needs immediate attention. "Their condition is pathetic. "Through this grading, government can concentrate on such colleges to improve their condition," he said. He said these colleges are mostly in rural areas.

In Bhopal, grade A was given to MVM, MLB and Sarojini Naidu Girls College. In all, four colleges were given D grade in Bhopal district. Among all districts, Sagar did not have any college with lowest grade. Rewa was at bottom of the heap with no college getting grade A. Highest number of colleges (14) has received grade D.
