About Us :

  

The Department of Atomic Energy (DAE), Government of India and the University of Mumbai, Vidyanagari Campus jointly launched, in September 2007, a Centre for Excellence in Basic Sciences (CBS) offering high-quality undergraduate teaching embedded in a postgraduate and research environment. CBS offers a five-year Integrated M.Sc. program in the Basic Sciences for students who have completed 10+2 schooling or its equivalent.A modern, flexible, integrated and seamless curriculum has been developed that places considerable emphasis on practical training and development of analytical and problem-solving skills in addition to formal learning. Some of the best teachers from University of Mumbai departments and University of Mumbai-affiliated colleges, and from proximate partner institutions like Bhabha Atomic Research Centre, Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, IIT Bombay and the Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education, have helped design courses and are participating in teaching activities of the Centre in the areas of physics, life sciences, mathematics, chemistry.

 

CBS is an autonomous centre and is governed by a Council chaired by The Secretary, Department of Atomic Energy and co-chaired by the Vice Chancellor of the University of Mumbai. Other members of the Council include the Directors of BARC, TIFR and IIT Mumbai, and the Joint Secretary (R&D) of DAE, Government of India. The complete list of members of the Governing Council are available on this website. Professor Deepak Mathur was the first Director appointed at CBS and Professor S.M. Chitre the first Chairperson of the CBS Academic Board. The current CBS Director is Professor R.V. Hosur.

Eligibility :

 

Students seeking admission to CBS have to appear for a National Entrance Screening Test (NEST) that is conducted at a large number of centres in India. NEST is a common screening test for both CBS and our sister organization, NISER, Bhubaneswar and Santiniketan. Selected students are called for counseling and admission to CBS. Provisional allotment of streams of integrated M.Sc. courses are made at the time of counseling and students are required to pay fees and other charges in full amount at the time of admission.

 

Fee Structure :

 

The tuition fee structure at UM-DAE CBS is as follows:

  • General Category students: - Rs. 1750/- per semester
  • Reserved Category Students: - Rs.75/- per semester

In addition students pay nominal rent of Rs 600/- per semester as monthly rental for hostel accommodation; boarding facilities are be made available on payment of actual costs (approximately Rs.2500/- per month)

 

Hostels :

 

The Five-year Integrated M.Sc. Program being a residential course, all students are required to stay in the hostels of CBS - Annabhau Sathe Bhavan and Prefabricated Structure hostels. The hostels are situated in the University of Mumbai, Kalina campus.Students are provided accommodation in the hostel at a nominal rent. The rooms in the hostels are spacious with good facilities. Students are provided with mess/canteen facility at a very modest rate. Hostel has common facilities such as a common internet room for accessing emails and for project work, a common television room and a common study area. Sports area for playing cricket, football, tennis, badminton, etc are available in the University campus. Equipments required for sports activities are provided to the students by CBS. The students are expected to be well-disciplined and they are required to adhere to the hostel rules as applicable from time to time.

 

Medical facilities at CBS:

 

A general medical practitioner makes regular, twice-weekly visits to CBS for minor health problems of students. CBS also has an arrangement with a nearby multi-speciality hospital, the Guru Nanak Hospital, for medical emergencies and admissions.

One Time Payment :  Total Rs. 11,100.00

 

Semester wise Payment :

General/OBC Category : Rs. 3,900.00         

Reserved (SC/ST) Category : Rs. 1,350.00
