The Defence Institute of Advanced Technology, (DIAT) as it is known today, came into being as the Institute of Armament Studies in 1952 in the CME campus. In 1967, the Institute was renamed as "Institute of Armament Technology, (IAT)", which moved to its present location at Girinagar, Pune. From the relatively narrow scope of Armament Studies alone in the Fifties, the role of the Institute was considerably enlarged by the Defence R&D Council in 1964 and further in 1981. On the basis of accreditation by the All India Council of Technical Education (AICTE), Pune University recognised eight courses for the award of ME degree in 1980. In the year 2000, the Institute acquired the status of a Deemed University. IAT has been renamed as DIAT w.e.f. 1st April 2006.

Eligibility:
For Ph. D:
- Post Graduate Degree in the relevant area of Science.
- Post Graduate Degree in Engineering [ME/M.Tech. or equivalent]
- GATE Score OR valid NET/ SET Certificate.
- Engineering Post Graduates who have secured M.Tech / M.E. admission through GATE or having a valid GATE score at present only are eligible to apply.
- Candidates should have secured minimum 60% aggregate or equivalent CGPA (6.5/10) in the qualifying examination. This is relaxed by 3% in the case of OBC candidates & by 5% for SC / ST candidates.
- Candidates who are in the final semester of their degree are eligible to apply provided they have secured over 60%(CGPA 6.5/10) in semesters till the final semester and are optimistic of scoring above the required percentage of marks in the last semester.
- Provisional certificate in such cases along with Mark sheet of the final semester are required to be submitted before commencement of programme.
For M. Tech:
- M.Tech: 55% marks or 5.5 CGPA in the qualifying examination and valid UGC-CSIR NET certificate/GATE Score.
- M. Tech. Electronics Engineering (Radar & Commn.): 60% marks/CGPA in the qualifying examination and valid UGC-CSIR NET certificate/GATE Score.
- The candidates who are in the final semester of their degree are eligible to apply; Mark sheet up to the last semester should be enclosed.
- Provisional certificate in such cases along with Mark sheet of the final semester are required to be submitted before commencement of programme.
Training & Placements:
Training & Placement Cell in the DIAT (DU) plays a vital role. As there are large numbers of engineering colleges coming up in India, the competition for employment is increasing every day & the job of placement is becoming a challenging one. A full pledged placement cell is functioning in DIAT (DU) with a full time placement officer. The Placement cell is inviting various Government, Semi Government Organizations, Private & Public Sectors for campus recruitment. For placement a large number of prospective employers are contacted during the year & efforts are made to invite those companies to visit DIAT (DU) & conduct campus recruitments. The objective of the Placement Cell is to look for a 100% employment of all the students. The Cell is assisted by student placement coordinators who lead a team of placement representatives from various courses of study. The placement Cell ensures & takes care to provide the best arrangements & hospitality for the visiting companies' officials. The Placement Cell provides all audio visual facilities for Power Point Presentations, written test, group discussion & interviews. It plays a very important & key role in counselling & guiding the students of the University for their Successful Career. The computerization of the entire activities of the placement Cell is in progress & this facility will be available to the organizations soon for easy & faster communication.
