About Us:


National Institute of Technology, Rourkela (NIT) formerly known as Regional Engineering College, (REC) is one of the premier national level institutions for technical education in the country. And is funded by the Government of India. Government of India has elevated the Regional Engineering College, Rourkela to a deemed university under the name of National Institute of Technology, Rourkela. The main objective of the institute is to produce quality Engineers and Scientists in Graduate and Post-Graduate levels in various branches of Engineering and Science. The institute is managed by the Board of Governors of National Institute of Technology (Rourkela) Society and vested with significant degree of administrative and financial autonomy. Government of India has recognised the institute as a premier institution of repute and has developed it as a center of excellence under plan funding. The institute has been modernised by two foreign collaborative funding agencies i.e. the Material theme in the Materials and Metallurgical Engineering department under Indo-U.K. REC project and the Computer Science and Electronics streams under World Bank cum Swiss Development Corporation IMPACT project.

 

The campus of the institute consisting of the institute buildings, halls of residence and staff colony is situated at the eastern end of Rourkela steel city, beyond Sector-1 over an area of 262 hectares of land provided by the Government of Orissa. It is a residential campus offering accomodation to faculty, staff and students. The campus has all the amenities for developing personal, social and academic skills of the student community. The city of Rourkela came into prominence in the year 1954-55, with the decision of the Government of India to set up the first Public Sector Steel Plant in this locality in collaboration with the then West Germany. The city is a huge metropolis connected with all parts of the country by railway and road. The population of the city is about 6 lakhs.

B.Tech : One needs to qualify JEE (MAIN), where weightage to this Examination is 60% and to XII Board Examination Result is 40%. Admissions are on the basis of the rank in JEE (Main).

 

Ph.D: 

The minimum qualification required for admission to Ph.D. programme in Engineering, Science, Management, and Humanities & Social Sciences is one of the following:

  1. M.E./M.Tech./M.Pharm in relevant discipline with at least 6.5 CGPA or 60 percent marks in aggregate in both B.Tech. (or M.Sc./B.Pharm/ MCA) and M.Tech. levels from a recognized technical Institute or University.
  2. B.E./B.Tech./B.Pharm/MCA or equivalent in relevant discipline with CGPA of 7.0 or 65 percent marks in aggregate.
  3. M.Sc. in Basic Sciences with CGPA 7.0 or 65 percent marks in aggregate in relevant disciplines.
  4. M.B.B.S./B.V.Sc. with CGPA 6.5 or 60 percent marks in aggregate. 

Additionally candidates having the following qualification can also apply for Ph.D. in Management and Humanities & Social Sciences: M.A. / MBA / M.Com. /M. Sc. in Humanities, or Social Sciences or Management with 60 percent marks or 6.5 CGPA Students without adequate background in the primary discipline will be required to have 10% extra marks (1.0 CGPA) to qualify over students with specialization in a primary discipline, unless explicitly exempted by the senate. 

 

M.Tech (Research):

The minimum qualification required for admission to M.Tech.(Research) programme in Engineering, Science, Management and Humanities & Social Science is one of the following:

  1. B.E./B.Tech./B.Pharm/MCA or equivalent in relevant discipline with 60 percent marks in aggregate (or 6.5 CGPA).
  2. M.Sc. in Basic Sciences with 60 percent marks in aggregate (or 6.5 CGPA) in relevant disciplines.
  3. M.B.B.S./B.V.Sc. with 60 percent marks in aggregate (or 6.5 CGPA).

Additionally candidates having the following qualification can also apply for M.Tech.(R). in Management and Humanities & Social Sciences: M.A. / MBA / M.Com. /M. Sc. in Humanities, or Social Sciences or Management with 60 percent marks or 6.5 CGPA Applicants Awaiting Results

 

1. For thesis based Postgraduate degrees [(M.Tech.(Research), MS or equivalent] a student is permitted to submit the final result within one year from the date of thesis submission. However, one documentary evidence (proof of thesis submission) from the candidateā€Ÿs Institute/University is required to be submitted at the time of admission. For all course based degrees [B.Tech, M.Sc., MBA, M.Tech (Regular)] results need to have been published before admission is granted. Differential academic qualifications across the departments have been made considering the departmental requirement, availability of candidates in the respective departments and uniform growth of all departments in the Institute.
