The North Orissa University (NOU) was established in the year 1998 vide Government of Orissa notification No.-32930/HE dated 13th July 1998.The University is recognized by the University Grants Commission under Sections 2(f) and 12(B) of UGC Act,1956 with effect from 15.02.2000 and 21.06.2006,respecively.It is recognized by Bar Council of India and DEC,IGNOU/UGC. North Orissa University is included in the list of Association of Indian Universities and Association of Commonwealth Universities. The University is also accredited by National Assessment & Accreditation Council (NAAC), Bangalore with B grade with effect from 10th January, 2011. The territorial jurisdiction of the University covers Mayurbhanj and Keonjhar districts of northern part of Orissa. These two districts are thickly populated with tribal population with an average of 63% inhabitants belonging to the Scheduled Tribes. There are 80 affiliated colleges, both general and professional, catering to the demand of higher education. As development depends crucially upon human capital, NOU shall act as a beacon light to this region so as to pull up the underprivileged youth to the national mainstream of art, culture, science and technology.University System aims at overall learning by both its teachers and students. It is not only in a local or domain based context but also in the global arena. The final goal of this learning may be used for further research and development and intuitively for sustaining oneself in the changing world and its requirement. The sole business of this system is to unfold Truth and discover one self. If this is done then the real discovery of life starts.

ST/SC Cell : There is a ST/SC cell in the University which provides Remedial coaching at PG level, coaching for entry into services of state and central governments, coaching for National Eligibility Tests for ST/SC and OBC/minorities students as per guidelines and fund provided by the UGC.

Central library : 

The Central Library of the University was established in the year 2001 and is now housed in an elegantly designed building located in a lush-green serene environment adjacent to the main administrative block,inside the campus of North Orissa University, Takatpur, Baripada. The library caters the need of students, teachers, researchers associated with the University and intelligentsia and cultured classes of North Orissa. The library was established as a centre to advance knowledge in the fields of non-conventional subjects relevant to this part of the state such as Tribal Studies, Wild-life & conservation Biology, Remote sensing & GIS, conventional subjects such as Botany, Chemistry, Physics, Zoology and Economics and some socially relevant and economically viable courses such as Biotechnology, Bioinformatics, Environmental Management & Technology, Computer Science and management and LLM.

The library committee, constituted as per statutes of University, to deal with the general administration of the library and frame relevant rules subject to approval of the authorities of the University. The Assistant librarian looks after the day to day affairs under overall supervision of Professor in charge, Central Library. The library has 23880 text and reference books in different subjects besides books of common interest. At present the library is subscribing for 75 journals and 24 magazines. Efforts are being made for automation of central library and to provide internet facility to the students.

Eligibility :

B. Sc Biotechnology : Science graduate with Hons or 50% marks in aggregate. At +2 level Biology/ Maths/ Statistics/ Comp. Sc. Is necessary

B.Sc : Hons. in respective subject or 50% marks in aggregrate with respective as a subject

MCA : From JEE list conducted by BPUT through central counseling(Orissa JEE)

MBA : Odisha Joint Entrance Examinations (OJEE) Merit List As per(Odisha JEE)

MFC : Graduate in any discipline Career ranking

Master of Library & Information Science : Graduate in any discipline Career ranking

MSW : Graduate in any discipline Career ranking

M.Phil : *55% (50% for SC/ST students) or equivalent grade of North Orissa University or any other university equivalent in the concerned/allied subjects.

M.Tech in Computer Science & Engineering : MCA/M. Sc. in Comp. Sc./ Chem./ Statistics (with Phys. & Math. combination at +3 level)/ Phys./ Math./ Math. & Computing with 60% marks or equivalent OR BE./ B. Tech. In Computer Sc./ IT/ Electronics/ Electrical with 60% marks or equivalent.

Training and Placement Cell :

The University has set up a Training and Placement Cell for training and creating opportunity for on and off campus recruitments in various organizations. Our students have been sent to different reputed research organizations/companies for vocational training /project works in their respective fields for work experience and future absorption there itself or elsewhere.
