Government Medical College, Jammu, a premier institute of J&K was started in the year, 1973 in a temporary building with the object to provide quality education and deliver the health care service to the people of this region. This institution is located in the heart of Temple City Jammu. This institution was started with the aim to train fifty medical students for MBBS course per year and to serve as referral hospital for Jammu Province. But now the seating capacity has been increased upto 120 students per year, Besides MBBS course the college also imparts Post-graduate training Course.From the make shift sheds of years, with meager staff and equipments, to the present day mammoth complete with chain of adequately staff and fully equipped associated hospitals, this college is now credited to the amongst a few top institution in the Northern Indian.

 

The institution started with a total of nine hundred beds and with the inauguration of Medical College Hospital building in the year of 1993, it has now increased to 1700 beds including associated hospitals including Sir. Col. R.N.Chopra Nursing Home. At present, Govt. Medical College, Jammu is catering to the patients from whole of Jammu province, part of Kashmir valley and adjoining areas of neighboring states of Punjab and Himachal Pradesh. Five Teaching Hospitals namely, Medical College Hospital, CD Hospital, SMGS Hospital, Psychiatry Hospital & Dental Hospital are associated with Medical College. There are 800 doctors including faculty and residents, 1000 Paramedical Staff including supervisory staff,1500 Class-III & IV employees working in the college and its associated hospitals. Three Blocks .i.e. R.s.Pura, Kot-Bhalwal and Dansal are also affiliated to Medical College, Jammu for training of Undergraduates & Post-graduate students of the college.

Eligibility :

 

MBBS :

  • Candidates appearing under Open Merit category must have passed Higher secondary part II
  • (Class XII) 10 +2 or equivalent from a recognized board or university with English, Physics ,
  • Chemistry and Biology as their elective subjects securing not less than 50% marks in aggregate.
  • Candidates must be permanent residents of J&K state as defined in section 6 of the Constitution of J&K state.
  • The candidates must have attained the age of 17 years on or before the month of December.
  • Candidates applying under reserved categories given in SRO-126 of 1994, dated 28.06.1994 as amended from time to time , must have secured at least 40% marks in aggregate.
  • Candidates applying under reserved categories given in SRO-126 of 1994, dated 28.06.1994 as amended from time to time , must submit copies of requisite category certificates together with the application form. The Category certificates should be issued by the issuing authorities as according to SRO.

Candidates applying for MBBS/BDS Courses under NR, NRDP, PMF, SIG categories must have secured 50% marks in the qualifying examination as in the case of candidates under the open merit category. The details of seats for all these categories are as follows.

  • Children of non-permanent resident (All India Service Officers) J&K Cadre who are allotted to the state.
  • Children of Non Permanent Resident employee of the State or Central Govt Offices or institution run by  the State and who have the continuous Service of not less than15 years in the J&K State : "NR" One Seat in GMC, Jammu
  • Children of Non Permanent resident Personal (Army, Navy and Air Force): "NRDP" One seat in GMC, Jammu
  • Children of Non Permanent resident Defence Personal serving in "SIG" (Siachen Glacier area) :"SIG" One  seat in Govt. Medical College , Jammu .

Admissions in GMC Jammu  :

 

All the admissions to GMC, Jammu are based entirely on the merit obtained by the aspirants in the Board of Professional Entrance Examination, conducted annually by the BOPEE (Professional Entrance Examination) of the state of Jammu and Kashmir

 

Mode of selection :                                                             

 

The students getting the highest marks in the BPEE test are selected.

  • If two students get same marks, their relative marks in Biology paper is decisive.
  • 50% seats are reserved for girl students.
  • The results are declared in the local news papers as well as over the net.
  • The student has to get an admission slip from the BOPEE after his selection and present it in the students section of GMC Jammu.
  • He has to then register himself in all the concerned departments of 1st M.B.B.S, pay the required fee and thus his journey begins.
