Medical Admissions, All Special Category Seats Filled

CHENNAI:
The first phase of counselling for MBBS admissions began on Friday even as the Madras high court gave a directive asking the Directorate of Medical Education (DME) to go ahead with the selection process but not to allot seats until Monday. On day one of the counselling at the Tamil Nadu Multispeciality Hospital in Omandur Estate, which was reserved for the special category, 3% of the seats available (77 seats including one in BDS) allotted to students from the orthopedically or physically disabled, ex-servicemen and sports category were filled. The selection committee had sent out invites to 144 students who fell under the special category after the rank list was released few days ago.

At the end of the counselling, the selection committee had allotted 68 seats for disabled, six for children of ex-servicemen and three for sports candidates. "Under the physically disabled category, those with a 40-70% lower limb disability were allotted seats. While the seats that are not filled go into general category, all the seats were filled in the special category this year," said an official. Though their seats were confirmed, none of the students were given allotment. The counselling process for the general category begins on Saturday with batches of 600 students being called each day until the first phase ends on June 25.

There are about 20 government medical colleges and one dental college in the state with a total of 2,265 seats. The Medical Council of India has approved 85% of seats for Tamil Nadu Medical Admission (TNMA) conducted by DME. With the remaining 15% of the seats being allocated under the all-India quota, counselling is being held for 2,257 seats with 77 seats falling under the special category quota.
