IIT-Madras Not the Only Choice for Tamil Nadu’s Students

An engineering classroom in IIT Madras is usually a melting pot of different cultures as this premier institute plays host to students from across the country. In fact, only around 7% of students in IIT-M are from Tamil Nadu. As there is no dearth of top engineering institutes in Tamil Nadu, IIT-M is not the only option for aspiring engineers from the state. IITs may be the default choice for many students, but in Tamil Nadu they have alternatives to pick and choose to fulfil their engineering dreams. Various engineering institutes in the state have received lakhs of applications. This could be one of the reasons behind Tamil Nadu registering a lower number of candidates appearing for JEE when compared to other states.

Of the 3,930 students who qualified for JEE (Advanced) in the state, more than 1,100 students did not appear for the examination. IIT-M faculty members said many students opt out of appearing for the exam if they scored a lower rank, while others would have applied to other engineering institutes.

Institutes like VIT, SRM and SSN say the number of applications they receive have increased over the years. This year, more than two lakh candidates registered for VIT Engineering Entrance Examination (VITEEE), while an estimated 1.75 lakh applications were received by SRM University for its entrance examination to the BTech course. A faculty member of SRM University said this year the institute saw a 40% rise in the number of applications from last year's 1.25 lakh applications. At 22,983, Tamil Nadu has the second highest number of students applying to the university.
