IIT Mandi has been on a rapid course of development as is evident from the following milestones:

• The laying of the foundation stone at Kamand, the site for the permanent campus of IIT Mandi, took place on 24th February 2009.
• The IIT Mandi Cell was set up at the IIT Roorkee on 18th March 2009, to steer the activities of the IIT Mandi.
• A Preliminary Project Report (PPR) outlining a road map of 10 years for development of academic program, campus development and related issues was finalized initially on 25.4.2009. A major component of the report was development of a scaled drawing of the 538 Acres of land at Kamand and its land-use-plan. The report was submitted to Govt. of H.P. in April 2009.
• The IIT Mandi was registered as a society in Uttarakhand, on 20th June 2009.
• The admission of the First batch of students of IIT Mandi took place in July 2009 and their classes were conducted from 27th July 2009, onwards. Staying arrangement for IIT Mandi students was made in student hostels, Rajendra Bhawan (Boys) and Kasturba Bhawan (Girls).
• Plans were finalized for development of a Transit Campus of IIT Mandi at Govt. Post graduate College, Mandi in August, 2009 during the visit of Shri Ashok Thakur, Additional Secretary, Govt. of India, MHRD, Department of Higher Education, on Aug. 13th, 2009. This campus will start functioning in near future and will be in operation till the main Campus at Kamand is developed.
• Revised PPR was finalized on Sep. 15, 2009 after incorporating changes in the forest land by excluding patches of dense forest.
• The buildings of Transit campus were handed over by the H.P. Govt. to IIT Mandi on Nov 16, 2009.
• An MoU was signed, for Creation of Virtual Class Rooms at IIT Mandi over National Knowledge Network (NKN), between IIT Mandi, National Informatics Centre (NIC) and National Informatics Center Services Incorporated (NICSI).
• The first meeting of Building & Works Committee, exclusively for IIT Mandi, took place on Dec. 14, 2009 to consider mainly the preliminary estimates submitted by CPWD for development of the Transit campus at Mandi. The First meeting of Finance Committee and BOG of IIT Mandi took place on Dec. 21, 2009, when the estimates prepared by the CPWD (for renovation of the Transit Campus buildings as well as Construction of a laboratory block and students activity centre etc) on the basis of Architectural drawings prepared by M//s R. P. Vaidya Associates - Space Matrix, were approved. BOG also approved specialization of Faculty and Grouping of Non-Teaching Staff for reservation purposes etc for IIT Mandi.

Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Mandi invites applications for admission into its full time Master of Sciences (M.S.) and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D) programmes offered in various areas at the School of Basic Sciences and School of Humanities and Social Sciences for the commencing session 2013-14

• The Institute started with 3 BTech programmes in Computer Science & Engineering, Electrical Engineering and Mechanical Engineering in July 2009. The intake is 40 students each. The first batch of BTech students in Computer Science & Engineering, Electrical Engineering and Mechanical Engineering are studying at the mentoring Institute, IIT Roorkee. In July 2010, classes will shift to a transit campus in Mandi town. Occupation of the permanent campus in Kamand is slated for 2011.
• The MTech programme will commence in 2011. From 2010, IIT Mandi will admit research scholars, both MS (by research) and PhD in all disciplines. All research scholars will be eligible for an Institute scholarship.

Eligibility:

MS: Candidates with a bachelor’s degree in Engg/Technology or masters degree in appropriate Sciences with valid score in GATE/NET or equivalent national level exam or GRE in appropriate discipline or; Candidates having associate membership of the following professional bodies will also be eligible for admission to the M.S. programme of their parent discipline provided they have a valid GATE score and have passed both part A and part B of the membership exams with a good academic record

Ph.D. in:

• Engineering: Candidates with a Master’s degree in Engineering/Technology with a good academic record or a Master’s degree by Research in Engineering/Technology disciplines, with a good academic record or; Candidates with master’s degree in sciences with a good academic record and of exceptional merit are eligible for the relevant Engineering discipline and with a valid GATE score or UGC/CSIR NET/ NBHM or equivalent qualification in the relevant area tenable for the year of registration. In the case of candidates with more than 5 years of relevant experience after the Master’s degree, the requirement of a test score may be waived
• Sciences: Candidates holding master’s degree in Sciences with a good academic record with a valid GATE score or UGC/CSIR/NET/master’s degree in Engineering/Technology with a good academic record/B.Tech degree of any IIT with a maximum of CGPA of 8.0 on 10.0 point scale or with a valid GATE Score or B.Tech./B.E degree of any recognized university in India with a minimum CGPA of 8.0 on a 10.0 point scale or equivalent with valid GATE score are eligible to apply
• Humanities and Social Sciences: Master’s degree in an eligible discipline with a good academic record and have passed UGC NET

Fellowships: The amount of fellowships will be at par with other IITs
