About Us:


Royal College of Physicians & Surgeons Started by Dr.Subodh Kumar Mallick in 1907 at 191 Bow Bazar Street. Subsequently changed to National Medical College of India ,  which later became Calcutta Medical College 301 / 3 Upper Circular Road on a land donated by Maharaja Manindra Chandra Nandi, MD, MS,C.B.E. Started functioning 1911. 50 indoor patients. Calcutta Free Hospital, 1910 191 Bow Bazar Street . Subsequently named Kings Hospital National Medical College (Jatya Vaidya- Sastra-pith ) the name was changed to National Medical Institute ( Jatiya Aurbiggan Vidyalaya ) in the same year. At Forbes Mansion , 11 Wellington Square. Started functioning from 14.4.1921 .For affiliation of Bengal Council of Medical Registration the two Societies dissolved in May 1923 to form a new Society named as Calcutta Medical Institute in April 1923 – with clinical teaching in other hospitals. Recognized by State Medical Faculty of Bengal for L.M.F.National Infirmary Hospital . House & land donated by Maharaja For the destitute. 65 beds. Teaching were made in two storied building. 5 year course of study. Closed by 31.12.1951.

 

In 1925 Deshbandhu Chittaranjan Das ( Mayor ) handed a plot of 11 bighas on a 99 year lease at 24 Gorachand Road from . Calcutta Corporation for hospital of National Medical Institute . Foundation stone was laid by Deshapriya Jotindra Mohan Sen Gupta ( next Mayor ) on 20.2.1927 & named as Chittaranjan Hospital at the corner of Dihiserampur Road (now Rameswarshaw Road ) and Gorachand Road ; 3 – storied building. Total 150 beds. Administrative office in the ground floor, 1 st floor was medical ward, 2 nd floor for doctors& nurses quarters. A bungalow with 3 rooms for Dr.Upendranath Bramhachari for Kala-zar ward – demolished in 1972 to build Rammohan Block. Another building with 25 beds and a special block for Cholera was built that later expanded to 45 beds. Here present administrative block is situated. National Medical Institute issued its own “Nat M.B” Certficate. In 1927 it was officiated for the L.M.F course ( 4 years ) of State Medical Faculty of Bengal. Teaching section  was shifted to 32 Gorachand Road , Entally In 1930 Government of Bengal granted Rs.4 lacks & with public donation 13 Bighas was purchased from Calcutta Improvement Trust ( C.I.T ) & school was completed by 1931 with two large two storied buildings one lecture theatres, Laboratories etc & another Anatomical block with large dissection hall etc Students also attend Calcutta Medical School. Calcutta National Medical College & Hospital In 1964 College was totally moved to Gorachand road.In 1967 the Institute was taken over by the Government.In 1972 Rammohan Block was constructed. On 5.3.1976 the Institute became nationalized. Calcutta National Medical Institute was established in June 1948 by the amalgamation of National Medical Institute at 32 Gorachand Road & Calcutta Medical Institute at Upper Circular Road after selling their properties.Property at Upper Circular Road was sold to E.S.I ( M.B. ) Scheme.                                        

 

Facilities In National Medical College

 

Accommodation: There are total seven hostels for the purpose of providing proper accommodation to the students. There is one girls’ hostel and six boys’ hostels. The girls’ hostel is popularly known as the Ladys’ hostel and provides all sorts of facilities which are required to give proper ambiance to study for girls. On other hand among the six hostels for male students three of them (Main Hostel, Lynton Hostel and Deshbandhu Hostel) are administered by government and other three (Dr. Sundarimohan Hostel, Khudiram Hostel, Dikhusha Hostel) are administered by private organizations. Except the girls’ hostel, all the six boys’ hostels are situated outside the college compound. Though these hostels are out of the college campus but they are within a close proximity to its premises.


National Medical College Library:
The National Medical College Library is one of the best medical college libraries in Kolkata. Apart from providing only reading facilities, this library also has adequate home issuing of book facilities for the students. The National Medical College library contains a total collection of almost 17000 books and 42 journals.


Computer Center:
Run by the Alumni Association of this medical college, the computer center of National Medical College helps the students to be more computer savvy. This computer center also provides Internet surfing facility only to those students who have a membership. This college has given birth to some of the great scholars in the field of medicine. If you go through the list of alumni, you will find that not only form the research field, but also from the professional level this college has produced some great figures. For MBBS:

The candidates appearing for the West Bengal Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) should be XIIth pass and should have secured 50% in Biology , Physics & Chemistry taken together.

 

Admission Procedure: Calcutta National Medical College offers 5.5 years bachelor's degree courses in MBBS. Admission to this course is made through a merit list prepared on the basis of the score of the candidates in the West Bengal Joint Entrance Examination (JEE). In this course the reservation available to different reserved categories like SC, ST and OBC is as per the Government of INDIA norms.

West Bengal Joint Entrance Examination Board:

  • Candidates shall be citizens of India and have been residing in the State of West Bengal uninterruptedly/continuously of not less than 10 years (in case of Nursing, not less than 5 years) immediately prior to the date of making application for admission.
  • Candidates whose parents are permanent residents of W.B., having their permanent home address in the State of W.B. are also eligible for admission.
  • In case of Nursing (H), candidates from any State of India may be considered of admission to non-Government Institutions.

Admission calendar

  • New session starts in the month of June-July. First year students are advised to visit the campus a few days before the start of the session to get accustomed to the place.
